If you have decided to host an international celebration, you will quickly realize that new logistics are involved to ensure everything goes smoothly. It is possible to be confused about appropriate guest etiquette. For example, do you need to arrange a babysitter? Is it expected that you will cover the cost of accommodation and flight? How soon should you send your save-the-dates?

Common Destination Wedding Etiquette FAQs

Should we cover the travel expenses of our guests?

No. Most people don’t understand that guests are responsible for paying for travel to and from destination weddings.

It would be best if you covered all expenses related to food and drink during the wedding and any post-wedding events such as rehearsal dinners and recovery lunches. There may be some exceptions to this rule, such as paying for accommodation for the bridal party members who might already have to pay for their outfits, hair, and makeup.

It is always appreciated to lower travel costs for your guests. Ask nearby hotels if they can offer group discounts or create a flight alert to your destination. Keep your guests informed about any special offers that may be available.

When is it appropriate to send save the dates?

Destination weddings are a big undertaking for you and your guests. Your guests will need to plan and save money for their trip. They may also need to organize time off work or childcare.

You should inform your guests as soon as possible about your plans. Send your save the dates by the 12-month mark and follow up with formal invitations 6-8 months later.

How can we provide all the details to our guests?

You can expect to receive many questions from your guests when you plan a destination wedding. Your guests will need to know everything they can about the area and details about accommodation.

A simple online platform such as a website is the best way to communicate all details about your wedding to guests. A wedding website is a great way to communicate all the important information to your guests in one place. It also saves you time!

Should we invite children?

You can plan an adult-only destination wedding. However, it is up to you to decide what your guests will be able to afford. It is not easy to ask parents to leave their children for an extended period. Be prepared to receive declined RSVPs if you decide to have a child-free day.

You can also arrange childcare to keep your children entertained and safe during the celebrations. Parents can relax and enjoy the wedding while a babysitter or nanny takes care of the children.

Should we invite our guests to additional wedding events?

We recommend that you invite all your friends to any international pre-or post-wedding celebrations. You have made a huge commitment to your guests during this special occasion. Show your appreciation and enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Can I ask for a gift?

It is understood that your guests will pay for their travel costs to be there with you for the wedding. Therefore, gifts are not necessary and should not be requested. Your guests’ presence at the wedding should be considered their gift. To ensure that your guests are on the same page, you might consider posting a note on your website.

The exception to this rule is for guests who cannot attend the wedding but have requested a gift instead. If this is the case, you can provide gift registry information to each guest.
